My short take www.goodreads.com/review/ review of new first book in a brand new series by my favorite sci-fi authors out there.
The Captive’s War #1 The Mercy of Gods
by James S.A. Corey
I’d been eagerly waiting for this series to start because, after The Expanse, nothing else in book format has matched its epic, cinematic scope. In recent decades, no other sci-fi series even comes close to the brilliance of The Expanse. So I had high hopes for this to satisfy all my craving for hard epic sci-fi saga. Years in waiting!
That said, this didn’t quite live up to expectations. The middle drags on for too long, and the ending feels predictable. The story lacks the epic scope you'd expect in a space opera, with barely any perspective from aliens or other locations. Instead, it confines itself to a single setting where not much happens, which gets repetitive. Yes, the personal and group dynamics are there, but I want the grand, sprawling feel of space opera—aliens included. The hundreds of pages spent in the same room make me worried about the rest of the series. After waiting so long since The Expanse, this was a bit of a letdown.
